Restoration of the Timber Garrison Gate at the War H.Q.

FWA has completed the restoration of the large timber garrison gate which secures the main access into the Second World War British Combined War HQ tunnels from Battery Street, Valletta. This gate was badly eroded as a result of the persistent water ingress problem into the wartime underground complex besides being infested with wood worm. There are very few such historic gates that remain in their place. At the other end of the same main tunnel there is another one which secures access from the

stone flying bridge that spans the Valletta Grand Ditch and links the St. Peter and Paul Counter-guard with the main Valletta lines. All work involved in this project was carried out by FWA's conservation & maintenance team and was funded by voluntary donations.
