Alexander Greck (1876–1959) was a composer, conductor, teacher, and musical organiser whose career spanned Corfu, Naples, and Alexandria. Born into a family of Maltese and British origin in the Ionian Islands, he developed within the rich musical traditions of Corfu before pursuing advanced studies at the Conservatory of San Pietro a Majella in Naples. Over the course of a long and varied career, he became an important figure in the musical life of both the Greek and Maltese diasporas in Egypt.

Drawing on archival research in Malta and Greece, this study reconstructs Greck’s life and examines his contribution to the cultural history of the eastern Mediterranean. It explores his operas, operettas, songs, orchestral works, and patriotic compositions, while situating them within the broader contexts of migration, diaspora, and the development of modern Greek music.

At the same time, the book highlights the role of Maltese community in Egypt in preserving and promoting cultural life, revealing how Greck’s Maltese heritage informed his artistic and social connections. Through the story of a composer who moved between multiple cultural worlds, this work sheds light on the networks of exchange that linked Malta, Corfu, southern Italy, and Egypt during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

From Malta to Corfu brings renewed attention to a neglected musician whose life offers a valuable perspective on the interconnected societies of the modern Mediterranean.
