‘Malta Illustrata’ by Fra Gianfrancesco Abela
Malta Illustrata is Abela’s most renowned work, first published in 1647, and is considered one of the earliest comprehensive studies of Malta. The book combines history, geography, and cultural description, covering a wide array of subjects such as the island’s ancient and medieval history, its archaeological sites—including temples, tombs, and fortifications—Maltese customs and social life, as well as its natural history, including flora, fauna, and minerals.
In the 18th century, Giovanni Antonio Ciantar enlarged and annotated the work, resulting in the two-volume edition known today. Malta Illustrata continues to be an invaluable resource for historians and archaeologists, offering first-hand observations and detailed descriptions of sites that have often changed or vanished over time.
Abela is widely regarded as the father of Maltese historiography. Born into a prominent Maltese family, he had a profound interest in the island’s archaeology, topography, and culture. His writings demonstrate meticulous research and a strong commitment to preserving Malta’s identity during the era of the Knights of St. John. In addition to history, Abela studied the island’s natural environment, exploring its flora, fauna, and mineral resources.
