Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna is shocked by the announcement that a commercial application has been made to convert the lower floor—the oldest part—of the ancient Palazzo Sofia, built in 1233 in Mdina, into yet another two catering outlets in the Silent City. Palazzo Sofia is one of the oldest buildings still standing in Mdina, having survived various earthquakes, sieges, and modern depredations.
Over the past decades, Mdina has been over-commercialised, which has sadly degraded its unique medieval and once-silent character. The addition of yet another two catering outlets in this very special building should be flatly dismissed. A more sympathetic use should be found—one that will not only respect its ancient character but also guarantee its long-term preservation.
Being among the oldest buildings in the old city makes it ideal for housing a permanent museum on Mdina and its suburb, Rabat, which is sorely lacking. Despite its ancient history, Mdina has only two true museums, and none are dedicated to the city itself. Mdina is visited by some 1.5 million tourists annually, most of whom leave with little more than the faintest idea of its important past.
FWA is objecting to this planning application(PA/00253/26)
